Dear Parents and Care Givers,
This year your student has the opportunity to be a member of our classroom “100 Book Club”!
To earn their way into this club, your student will need to complete reading 100 books at home during the course of the school year. The last week of school, we will have an ice cream social for students who have made it into the club!
Your student can borrow books from the school or public library, or use books from home. These books will be separate from any reading homework your student will have this year. We have roughly 175 days of school, so a good goal would be to read a book each school night.
You and your student can read the books together, you can read some to them, or they can read them on their own. I would *love* for you to do a combination of these things---this way your student is hearing you read fluently, they are practicing reading out loud to develop fluency and expression, they are working on their own independent reading, and you’ll get to spend some time together too!
Your student has been given a recording sheet for the 100 Club. They will use this to write down the titles of the books they have read...just make sure they are in the correct spots as there are 30 different types of books that they must read and then 70 of their own choosing. This will be kept in their G.O. binder, and I will check them periodically at school.
Your student can become a bronze club member by reading 50 books, a silver member for reading 75 books, or a gold member by completing the 100 books. However, the 30 required types of books must be met before they can be a bronze member! Your student will also get special awards for completing each level and will be invited to a celebration at the end of the year for students who have made it into the club!
I am very excited about this home-reading program! In the past we have required students to read for 15 minutes a night, but I think this will be more engaging for the students! Thank you for helping your student become such a great reader this year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Horwart
